Authors' complaints about Entropik/plagiarized books for artificial intelligence training

Authors sued Anthropic for misusing their books to teach cloud AI chatbots.

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic is facing a lawsuit in California federal court by three authors who say the company misused their books and hundreds of thousands of others to train chatbots based on cloud artificial intelligence. is

Andre Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson are among the authors and journalists who have used photocopies of their own and others' works to train Cloud to respond to human stimuli.

An Anthropic spokeswoman said Tuesday that the company was aware of the authors' complaint and its evaluation, but declined to comment further, citing pending litigation. The authors' lawyer refused to comment on this matter.

The lawsuit joins several other major lawsuits filed by copyright holders, including visual artists, news media and record labels, over material used by tech companies to train their artificial intelligence systems.

Separate groups of authors have sued OpenEye and Meta for misusing their work to train the large language models underlying their chatbots.

The case, filed on Monday, is the second against Anthropic after music publishers sued last year for allegedly misusing copyrighted lyrics for cloud training.

The authors said in their complaint that Anthropic has built a multi-billion dollar business by stealing hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books.

According to the complaint, the works of these authors were included in a database of counterfeit books that Antrop used to train Cloud.

The lawsuit sought an unspecified amount of monetary damages and an injunction to permanently prevent the misuse of the authors' work.
