Canadian railway workers continue to strike despite government intervention

Eviralnews,, quoted by Reuters, despite the intervention of the Canadian government to end the strikes and disruptions of the country's rail network, the Canadian Railway Trade Union announced that the workers will go on a nationwide strike again on Monday.

It is a new threat to the country's economy as workers have announced they will fight the government's decision to end the unprecedented rail shutdown.

The Teamsters union announced Friday that railcar stewards, locomotive engineers and other member workers of the Montreal-based union will strike Monday, just days after the company's workers returned.

This announcement is part of the latest developments related to disputes between workers and officials of two of Canada's top railway companies.

Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Railway (CPKC) have suspended more than 9,000 employees, leading to an unprecedented shutdown of the country's rail network, which could cost the economy and supply chains hundreds of billions of dollars. North America will cause damage.

Canadian Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon, citing the threat to the economy, asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on Thursday to order an end to it, as well as binding arbitration against the union as well as rival Canadian National Railway. That is to impose the Kansas City Pacific Railway Company.

Canada is the second largest country in the world by land area and relies heavily on rail transportation to move a wide range of goods. Business and agriculture groups have urged Ottawa to act quickly.

Francois Laporte, president of the Canadian Teamsters union, said McKinnon's announcement was unacceptable.

He told reporters at a protest rally at the CPKC headquarters: The best way to have a contract is at the negotiating table. We do not believe that a third party (should) decide what our working conditions are.

He said that if a return-to-work order is issued, “our people will still be on strike. We will still be on the floor, so operations (work) will not resume.”
