imminent agreement with Gazprom for the development of a gas field — Updated

Present at the “Russian Energy Week” forum, held from September 26 to 28, the president of the Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority (ARH) of Algeria, Rachid Nadil, announced an imminent agreement with the Russian hydrocarbon giant Gazprom for the development of a gas field in the south of the country.

In a statement to RT on the sidelines of his participation in the Russian Energy Week, which was held from September 26 to 28 in Moscow, the president of the Hydrocarbon Regulatory Authority (ARH) of Algeria, Rachid Nadil announced an imminent agreement with the Russian hydrocarbon giant Gazprom for the development of a gas field in the south of the country.

“We have been holding negotiations for some time with Gazprom, the largest hydrocarbon group in Russia. Today we have reached the development phase and we are about to sign the contract,” he said. “All that remains is to start extracting the gas,” he insisted.

While emphasizing the importance of Algerian-Russian cooperation in the field of energy, the head of the ARH did not provide any details either on the location of the gas field which will be developed with Gazprom or on the precise date of the signing of the agreement.

“We use several Russian equipment in our oil installations and we are in permanent contact with our Russian partners in order to develop cooperation and import new equipment,” argued Rachid Nabil.

Strategic partnership

The imminent signing of this gas agreement comes at a time when relations between Algeria and Russia are booming. The two countries have recently intensified cooperation in various fields, including energy, defense, and culture.

Algiers and Moscow have maintained strong and privileged long-standing relations focused primarily on energy and security cooperation. In 2021, trade between the two countries reached three billion dollars, despite the Covid-19 pandemic, according to figures from the Algerian embassy in Moscow.

These solid and privileged relations recently gained new momentum after the state visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received in June 2023 at the Kremlin by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. The two presidents had, on this occasion, expressed their mutual wish to strengthen the “strategic partnership” between Moscow and Algiers.
