Iraqi Prime Minister's goals of visiting North Africa
Eviralnews,, last week, the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, arranged a two-day trip to two African countries, Egypt and Tunisia. These trips were based on two economic axes and the investigation of the latest conditions of the Gaza crisis.
Gaza crisis; The focus of Sudanese and El-Sisi negotiations
In the first destination of his African trip, Al-Sudani arrived in this country with the welcome of “Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi”, the president of Egypt at “Al-Alamin Palace”. The place where the Prime Minister of Iraq was welcomed was highly noticed by the media. “Al Alamin Palace” is located in the Alexandria province of Egypt and was built inside the new city of “Al Alamin”. It is expected that this city will soon become the commercial-administrative capital of Egypt.
In addition to economic issues, Al-Sudani and Al-Sisi also discussed the issue of the crisis in Gaza. The Iraqi government, in line with Cairo's role in the ceasefire negotiations and the exchange of prisoners as a regional mediator, was able to be at the top of the countries that have sent the most aid to Gaza by creating a passage for sending humanitarian aid through the West Bank and Rafah.
At the “Urgent Receiving of Humanitarian Aid for the Gaza Crisis” conference held in June, the Iraqi Prime Minister called on other countries to recognize the Palestinian state, and further proposed the establishment of a fund to help Gaza.
In the meeting with the President of Egypt, the Prime Minister of Iraq, after referring to Tel Aviv's obstacles in the way of negotiations for the exchange of Palestinian and Israeli prisoners in Cairo, considered the silence of the international community as a factor for the Israeli regime to cross the red line. Al-Sudani also praised Egypt's role in the Gaza peace talks.
The last plan of the Iraqi Prime Minister in his trip to Egypt was to meet with the country's important investors. The successful experience of Egyptian investment companies in Iraq has strengthened the economic partnership between the two countries. The main activities of Egyptian investors in Iraq include housing, telecommunications and urban reconstruction.
While explaining the current economic and commercial situation of Iraq, which has created a suitable environment for foreign investors, Sudani invited them to participate in the development road project along with the UAE, Qatar and Turkey. Earlier, Egypt had announced its willingness to participate in this project. Meanwhile, many experts believe that the importance of the Suez Canal will decrease if Baghdad builds and implements the development road project.
In their meetings, the heads of Iraq and Egypt also mentioned their partnership with Jordan. In recent years, the senior officials of Iraq, Jordan, and Egypt hold tripartite conferences periodically, where various axes in the economic and security fields are discussed. In this regard, recently, the power grid of western Iraq has been connected to the national power grid of Jordan, and it is expected that in the coming years, Egyptian electricity will reach the energy markets of Iraq through Jordan.
According to the media of the Arab world, the Iraqi and Egyptian officials did not sign an agreement during the meetings between the officials of the two countries, but it was decided that the Egyptian high-level economic delegation will leave for Baghdad within the next month.
The first visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister to Tunisia in the post-Saddam era
After the completion of Mohammad Shia al-Sudani's trip to Egypt, he went to Tunisia. Al-Sudani arrived in Tunisia as the first prime minister of Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, the former dictator of this country.
The purpose of the Iraqi Prime Minister's visit, in addition to the economic axis, was to show the importance of the North African region in the approach of the country's foreign policy apparatus. In the past months of its activity, the Sudanese government has shown that it always aims to establish strong relations with other countries of the world, especially the countries of the Arab world, beyond the neighboring countries. Strengthening bilateral transregional relations is one of the Sudanese goals to move in the direction of diversifying foreign relations and gaining a superior position among Arab countries.
It was in this direction that the joint committee of Iraq and Tunisia was established three months before Sudani's visit to this country. This committee is responsible for coordinating the partnership between the two countries in the fields of oil, industry, trade, culture, sports and tourism, based on which it strengthens the relations between the two countries.
After the relative stability of Iraq governing the political and economic environment of Iraq following the defeat of ISIS, the ruling governments in Baghdad have always tried to effectively show Iraq's position in the international environment through the establishment of relations with extra-regional countries. It seems that the Sudanese trips to Egypt and Tunisia are also in this direction.
