“Signal” messenger was blocked in Russia

A security agency in Russia blocked the Signal messaging app for violating the country's laws.

Eviralnews,, quoted by ReutersRussia's state communications watchdog announced that Signal, an encrypted messaging app, has been blocked in the country for violating laws related to counter-terrorism operations.

The Russian agency said: “The Signal app has been blocked due to the violation of the requirements of the Russian law on the misuse of messaging applications for terrorist and extremist purposes.”

Before the announcement of the spokesperson of this agency and before any action, hundreds of signal users had reported bugs in the messenger program. Signal is a secure app used by about one million Russian citizens to keep their messages and conversations private.

Internet service monitoring sites reported more than 1,500 complaints about the signal, mostly from users in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Mikhail Klimarov, author of “For Telecom” Telegram channel, told Reuters: “This action is an indication of the blocking of the Signal messenger in Russia, and not a technical problem in this program.”

Currently, users have reported that they can use the Signal app by using it through a filter or by using the built-in censorship bypass mode. Moreover, it is no longer possible to use this application or open a new user account in it without a filter breaker, and users are faced with a “server error” message.
