Tesla's request from Canada to reduce taxes on electric vehicles
Eviralnews,, after Canada imposed a 100% tariff on the import of electric cars made in China, the American company Tesla, which produces many of its electric cars in China, requested an exemption from this law.
A source familiar with the matter, who asked not to be named, told Reuters that Tesla had entered into negotiations with Canada before the official announcement.
The source said the carmaker had asked for duty rates similar to those it received in the European Union.
In a move similar to its western allies, the Canadian government announced that it would increase import duties on electric cars made in China by 100% and import duties on steel and aluminum by 25%.
The move is similar to that of the United States, Canada's closest trading partner, where the Biden administration imposed 100 percent tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles in May.
In contrast, the EU plans to impose much lower tariffs on imports from China, particularly Tesla cars.
This decision was made after a three-day meeting behind closed doors with the presence of US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and ministers of this country in the city of Halifax in the province of Nova Scotia.
Trudeau said: “Players like China have decided to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace, which puts the security of our vital industries at risk and puts Canadian auto and metal workers out of work.”
He also emphasized that Ottawa will continue to work with the United States and its allies to ensure that consumers around the world are not unfairly disadvantaged by the non-market practices of countries like China.
Canada's new tariffs on electric vehicle imports, which include hybrid passenger cars, trucks, buses and vans, will take effect on October 1 and will be on top of the existing 6.1 percent tariff on imports from China.
Additional duties for the import of steel and aluminum will also start from October 15 in this country.
According to the report, the 100 percent tariffs on China's electric car imports will also affect Tesla cars made in the country.
The Canadian government announced that if car manufacturers move their production from China to other countries, they will not be affected by the law.
