  • The world premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival

Todd Phillips, producer, screenwriter and director, was born on December 20, 1970 in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Long Island in a Jewish family. He went to New York City Film University for academic studies, but he could not afford the heavy tuition fees of this university. At that time, Todd Phillips worked in a movie rental store. Working in this store made him fall in love with comedy movies of the 80s, and according to him, watching these movies had the greatest impact on his filmmaking, and this is clearly evident from the movies he directed in the following years. In the same short time that Todd Phillips was studying at the university, he made his first documentary called Hated with 13 thousand dollars that he had saved; The documentary was about the performances of punk rock singer JJ Allen, and Phillips directed, wrote and produced his first project.

Todd Phillips was very interested in music since his childhood and music plays an important role in the works of this director, and finally after making various documentaries and films about music and musicians, now with the musical film Joker: Folie a Deux (Joker: Common Madness) in The 2024 Venice Film Festival is present and Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga play the two main roles in this film. The first part of “Joker” also performed extremely well at the box office, grossing more than $1 billion on a budget of $55 million, and just consider the accolades, awards and sales of the first part to understand the high expectations for the second part, especially at the film festival. Go to Venice, and now the head of the festival has given an account of the second part of “Joker” after watching it.

Synopsis: Joker: Folie A Deux continues the story of failed comedian and stand-up comedian Arthur Flack as the Joker, but in this sequel Arthur doesn’t become a true criminal. Two years after the events of the first film, Arthur is now in Arkham State Hospital. She falls in love with her music therapist named Lee, played by Lady Gaga. Their relationship turns into a shared delusion that leads to a musical frenzy and a movement by Arthur’s followers to free him. It seems like an exciting film in the psychological and musical genre, we expect that it will have a different and more twist than the simplicity of the first part, and this new theme is connected to the dark narrative of the first film, and we will be faced with a darker and more violent work. Phillips said about Arthur’s character: “Arthur is clearly not a criminal genius. It has never been. Arthur has become an icon for people. This icon now unwittingly pays for the crimes he committed in the first film, but at the same time finds what he always wanted, love. This is what he has always been looking for even if he has been pushed and pulled in different directions. So we tried to make the purest version of this character.”
