Yaroslava Mahochykh, the Ukrainian record-breaker in high jump, won the 2024 Olympic gold medal on Sunday night at the Stade de France. He, who was forced to flee his country due to the Russian attack, won the championship in the most prestigious and biggest sporting event in the world.
Between each jump at the Paris Olympics, Mahuchich lay down in her green sleeping bag and appeared to be dozing, meditating, or concentrating on training. Pictures of his special relaxation have gone viral, and he told the Times about it: “When I lie down, I feel comfortable and sometimes I can watch the clouds.” Sometimes I count the numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4… or inhale and exhale. “I relax and I don't think I'm in the stadium.”
His interesting method paid off on Sunday as he won the gold medal in the 2m jump.
Mahochikh's method started in 2018, that is, the same year he became the high jump champion at the Youth Olympic Games. Sergey Stepanov, who along with his wife Tetina Stepanov are Mahochych's trainers, noticed that sitting too much between jumps caused blood to pool in Mahochych's legs, and so the idea of a sleeping bag was born. Whenever Mahuchikh competes in the high jump, he carries a backpack containing a yoga mat, sleeping bag and socks. Sometimes he wears a hoodie.
Mahuchikh said in a press conference after winning the medal on Sunday that he receives a new sleeping bag every season. “I recommend all girls to have this mattress and blanket because they can use it in different climates. “When it rains, it doesn't get wet, and since it's a camping blanket, it never gets hot.”
Mahuchykh's gold medal is very important for Ukrainians who are still involved in the war. “Approximately 500 athletes were killed in this war,” Mahochikh said. They will never compete. They will never celebrate. They never fill this space. I am happy that I won the gold medal. “This medal is really for all of them.”
