A series of circular holes and ceiling skylights in the shape of a ring of light have created an interesting space for trees to grow in this house in Semarang, Indonesia.

According to Faradid, a series of circular holes and ceiling skylights in the shape of a ring of light created an interesting space for the growth of trees in this house in Semarang, Indonesia. This house was designed by Tamara Wibovo architecture studio.

This house, which is called Hale Noor or Halle, has two gabled and warehouse-like forms, which are covered with charcoal wood and placed next to a central strip of indoor and outdoor spaces, which are under a flat concrete roof.

This central roof is shaped by a series of circular cuts. Above the outer spaces, large holes facing the sky were created, which formed a canopy for the areas below.

Inside, above the living room and bedroom, only the edges of these circles are left open to create halo-like ceiling skylights.

According to this architectural studio: “These circular holes or rings of light give a powerful feature to this architecture and its spatial experience.”

“The halo-like shape of these holes allows light to enter the house in an interesting way during the day and to shape the falling rainwater.”

At the front of the house, a large paved driveway leads to a roofless garage between the garage on the single-story east side and an all-glass office on the opposite two-story side.

The entrance to the house is sandwiched between this glass office and a latticed wooden panel that overlooks the central courtyard of the house while protecting the more private spaces.

At the heart of the house is a large dining room covered with full-length, north-south pivoting glass doors that open onto the courtyard and pool, providing ventilation and visual layering of the spaces.

“The house is designed to have multiple layers in the interior and exterior so that each room has access to air and light from both sides.”

“The swimming pool is sandwiched between the indoor and outdoor spaces, with a circular concrete canopy covering half of it while the rest is completely open.”

Adjacent to the central dining area is a sitting area and guest bedroom, while the master bedroom enjoys the most privacy at the far end of the property near the rear garden.

A staircase in the living area leads to the second floor of the house's western space, where the children's bedrooms are paneled with narrow wooden planks.

The second floor leads to the central concrete roof, where the circular voids are covered with small circular areas of wild grass.

The eastern block of the house is dedicated to the service areas of the house, including the kitchen and a separate bathroom that is directly accessible from the pool.
