Mary Teresa Barra was born on December 24, 1961 in Royal Oak, Michigan. He is an American businessman who has been elected as the CEO of General Motors since January 15, 2014. She is the first female CEO of a “Big Three”. In December 2013, General Motors selected him to succeed Daniel Akerson as CEO. Prior to being named CEO, Barra was executive vice president of global product development, purchasing and supply chain.
Barra was born in Royal Oak, Michigan and raised in Waterford, Michigan. She is the daughter of Anthony Makella, a mold maker at General Motors, and Rita Makella (née Farid). He graduated from Waterford Matt High School in 1979.
Barra started his career with General Motors at the age of 18 in 1980 while still a student. His job was checking fender panels and inspecting hoods, and he used this job to pay for college tuition. He subsequently held various engineering and administrative positions, including managing the Detroit/Hamtramck assembly plant.
In February 2008, he became vice president of global manufacturing engineering. In July 2009, he was promoted to Vice President of Global Human Resources until February 2011, when he was appointed Executive Vice President of Global Product Development.
In December 2013, Barra was named CEO of General Motors. She is the first female CEO of a major automobile company in the world. Under his leadership, GM has focused on improving quality, safety and fuel efficiency. He has also overseen the company's transition to electric vehicles.
