Mbappe was born in the 19th arrondissement of Paris on December 20, 1998, and grew up in Bundi, located in the northeastern French countryside, in the family of Wilfried Mbappe, a former Cameroonian footballer, and Fayza Lamari, a French handball player. He started playing football at the age of six and joined Ace Bundy's youth academy at the age of ten. Mbappe's talent was evident from his childhood. At the age of 14, he was spotted by scouts from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in Ligue 1 and joined their youth academy in 2013.

Mbappe was mentored by his father Wilfred when he started his career with AS Bundy. Antonio Riccardi, another of his youth coaches at AS Bondi, stated:
The first time I coached him was six years old. It can be said that he is different. Kylian could be much more active than other kids, his dribbling was already great and he was much faster than others. He was the best player I have seen in 15 years of coaching here. In Paris, there's a lot of talent, but I've never seen one like him. He was what we call the best.
Eventually, Mbappe moved to the Clairefontaine academy, where he performed so well that many French clubs such as Real Madrid, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich tried to sign him.
