NATO establishes a headquarters for the Ukrainian mission in Germany

Eviralnews, citing “De Volt” newspaper, NATO wants to coordinate the delivery of weapons and training activities for the armed forces of Ukraine in Germany, a place for this purpose is supposed to be created in Wiesbaden.

In this way, based on the decisions made, the headquarters of NATO's planned operation to coordinate the delivery of weapons and training activities for the armed forces of Ukraine will be located in Germany.

The German news agency was informed by NATO circles on Friday that Wiesbaden is planned as the location for the headquarters. The base of the American armed forces in Europe, which has so far performed coordination tasks, is also there. The operation is led by a three-star general who reports directly to NATO's supreme commander in Europe.

The operational plan for the new NATO mission was approved in a written procedure by the North Atlantic Council on Thursday, which was then endorsed by defense ministers on Friday.

These support tasks have so far been carried out mainly by the United States of America. At the end of 2022, they set up a 300-strong unit called the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U) at the European headquarters of the US Armed Forces in Wiesbaden-Hessen.

This NATO project is also seen as a precautionary measure in case of Donald Trump's possible return to the US presidency from January 2025. The Republican candidate's comments in the past have raised doubts about whether the United States will continue to support Russia's defensive war against Ukraine. The Western military alliance is concerned that the political shift in Washington will also affect the coordination of arms deliveries and training activities for Ukraine's armed forces.

Hungary will not participate in the new NATO project. Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government is concerned that the project could push the union into direct confrontation with Russia.

To ensure that Hungary would not block the necessary consensus for the project, the country was assured that it would not need financial or personnel assistance.

This new project is currently referred to within the alliance as “NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine” (NSATU). Most NATO countries had already voted in favor of the name “NATO Ukraine Mission” for the project, however, the German federal government took the position that the name could be mistaken for the alliance's intention to send troops to Ukraine.

Based on the agreed action plan, further preparations for the project can now be made. Ideally, the project should be officially launched in July, when Olaf Schultz and 31 other NATO leaders meet in Washington for a summit.
