A land built for the end of time

The land of apocalypse, the hills of South Dakota

On these hills in the South Dakota landscape are hundreds of concrete military shelters that have been repurposed to create the largest group of survival shelters.

According to Faradid, families and different groups can rent these shelters to use them as a shelter in case of a catastrophic event, such as a nuclear war, a viral pandemic, or a meteor strike.

The cost of renting these shelters is $25,000 in advance plus a 99-year land lease of $1,000 per year.

Vivos xPoint, which bills itself as the largest survival community on Earth, is located in the Black Hills region of South Dakota, just south of the town of Edgemont.

575 shelters made of hard concrete in this area were first built in 1942 as an army ammunition depot known as Fort Igloo and finally closed in 1967.

California-based survival company Vivos is now converting the massive complex, which spans about 18 square miles. This off-grid area is surrounded by a fence and access is via road or the nearby municipal airport.

According to Vivos: “This area is strategically located in one of the safest areas of North America, at a high and dry altitude of about 3,800 feet, its climate is relatively mild and far from large bodies of water, and it is approximately 100 miles from the nearest targets. It is far away from a known nucleus.

These bunkers are built and reinforced to withstand 500,000-pound blasts (seven bar pressure) and are spaced an average of 122 meters apart in all directions.

Each shelter can accommodate 10 to 20 people and the supplies needed to survive for a year.

The width of these shelters is eight meters and their length is 18.3 and 24.4 meters. Its arched ceilings reach four meters at the highest point and the spaces can be protected with concrete and steel explosion-proof doors.

The interior can be furnished to the specifications of the tenants, but there are additional costs.

“The interior of the shelter will be your blank canvas that you can prepare as you wish, with no restrictions on how many people you want to share this shelter with in times of crisis.”

Instead of windows, LEDs are inside the shelters to simulate the changing views of the outside world.

Water is pumped from two underground wells and stored in reinforced concrete tanks before being placed in each shelter.

The on-site facilities are varied, from a grocery store and medical clinic to a shooting range and hot tub to be used when it is safe to leave the shelter.

Vivos also promises 24/7 security with military-trained guards and camera systems. The company will also provide shelter at a facility in Indiana and is developing a similar community in an abandoned castle in Europe.

Design for survival became a hot topic in 2012, when the ancient Mayan civilization predicted the end of the world.

Before the projected date, the creators came up with ideas, including a kit containing practical items and a set of modern apocalyptic clothing for survival in harsh conditions.

The use of concrete trenches around the world, many of which were built during the world wars of the early 20th century, has changed in many ways.

In the Netherlands, one of these shelters has been converted into a small holiday home, while another has been split in half to create a visitor attraction.
