According to Reuters news agency, however, North Korean Foreign Minister Cho Sun Hui said that the country has no desire for such a meeting with Japan and rejects any negotiations.

He continued, Pyongyang has no desire to help solve the problem of abducted Japanese. North Korea reacts harshly to any interference by Tokyo in its sovereignty.

North Korea's foreign minister also said, referring to the Japanese prime minister: “I cannot understand how he insists on a problem that he cannot solve in this way.”

In 2002, Pyongyang confirmed the abduction of 13 Japanese citizens decades earlier. Five of the men and their families were later reunited in Japan and told that the others had died.

North Korea's official news agency also reported that the country's ambassador to China also said that no meeting will be held at any level with Tokyo.

These statements by North Korean officials came while Kim Yo-jong, the sister of the country's leader, had previously said that she would welcome talks only if Japan was ready to start anew without “returning to the past”.
