Washington's stonewalling in the strategic agreement between Iraq and Türkiye

According to the report of the international group of Tasnim news agency, “Saleha Allam”, a writer and researcher of Turkish issues, revealed in a note that the US is stonewalling the strategic agreement between Iraq and Turkey.

On Monday, May 3rd, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after returning from America. During this trip, 26 agreements were signed in various political, economic, social and tourist fields. Five of the 26 signed agreements cover strategic relations, cooperation on military issues, security, combating terrorism, and manufacturing military equipment.

Negotiations between Türkiye and the United States

In the recent negotiations with Turkish security and diplomatic authorities, the United States proposed direct and indirect confrontation with joint terrorist groups (ISIS and PKK). This proposal was strongly opposed by Türkiye.

Ankara has declared that it does not accept cooperation with a terrorist organization to fight another terrorist organization or case-by-case cooperation of allied countries with terrorist organizations. The strong conflict between Ankara and the PKK, which has been waging a fierce war against Turkey from its camps in Syria and Iraq for years, has made Ankara not to accept America's arguments.

The security and military agreements of Iraq and Turkey have aroused the concern of various Kurdish groups, including the PKK terrorist group and the People's Defense Units (YPG), and have caused the United States to come to the field to prevent a serious confrontation with these groups. . Nevertheless, America is worried about the possible consequences of military and security cooperation between Baghdad and Ankara, which can end the presence of YPG and PKK on the borders of Iraq, Syria and Turkey.

In February of last year, “Yashar Güler”, the Minister of Defense, and “Metin Gorak”, the Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Army, succeeded in obtaining the consent of the Iraqi officials regarding the banning of PKK activities in the Iraqi borders. For this reason, the relations between Iraq and Türkiye improved from a security and military point of view.

According to the claims of the Turkish media, according to the agreement of the two countries, a military operation led by the Turkish military forces will soon begin at a depth of 30-40 kilometers from the Iraqi territory against the terrorist forces opposing the Turkish government. This issue has brought strong opposition from the Americans.

Reasons why Biden refused to meet with Erdogan

In this regard, Ankara has recently started a new initiative, which is to resolve the terrorism case without Washington's intervention. The two-sided and ambiguous policy of the United States against terrorist groups in recent years has motivated Turkey to ignore the United States and convince Baghdad to cooperate in this field. It seems that these developments will be the beginning of important changes in the policies of Iraq, Syria and Turkey towards Kurdish groups active in these three countries.
