in pursuit of cooperation to suppress students; Increasing pressure to remove the president of Columbia University
In the wake of Israel's war in Gaza, Columbia University administrators have come under intense scrutiny. University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill and Harvard President Claudine Gee both resigned amid pressure over their response to anti-Semitism on campus.
James Finkelstein, a professor emeritus of public policy at George Mason University who studies the selection and hiring of university presidents, told CNN: “He is in serious danger.”
At Columbia, some students, professors and left-leaning lawmakers are outraged that Shafiq allowed the NYPD to break up pro-Palestinian student protests.
They say the crackdown on student protests, which led to more than 100 arrests, violates academic freedom. Meanwhile, students, religious groups and right-wing lawmakers say the administration has failed to stop anti-Semitism on Columbia's campus and in protests outside.
“His chances of keeping his job are fifty-fifty at best,” Finkelstein added.
