Unrest in Senegal; Police confronting protesters with tear gas – Mehr News Agency | Iran and world's news

According to Mehr News Agency, quoted by Reuters, the police and security forces in Senegal dispersed the protesters with tear gas.

Following the postponement of the presidential elections in Senegal, a protest demonstration was held in the capital of this country.

Senegalese President Maki Sall announced on Saturday that the elections scheduled for February 25 will be postponed due to disputes over the integrity of the election process. The opposition and civil society groups condemned this action of the government.

The Parliament of Senegal is going to decide on the plan to hold presidential elections on August 25 and to extend the term of President Maki Sal until the election of his successor.

On Sunday, around 200 demonstrators set fire to tires in one of the main streets of the capital, causing disruption to traffic. The police dispersed the protesters by firing tear gas and arrested several people. At least two of the opposition candidates in the presidential elections were arrested in these riots.
